چکیده

Pavement frictional characteristics are commonly determined by conducting skid tests in accordance with ASTM Standard E274. The results of these tests [skid number (SN)] are used in ranking roads to establish construction priorities and to estimate tirepavement friction in accident analysis. The role of SN in these two applications is addressed. There are serious limitations constraining the use of SN in accident analysis as well as in pavement management. Use of SN-based estimates of coefficient of friction may lead to large errors in estimating the braking distance or initial speed of a vehicle involved in an accident. In pavement management, SN is an important factor in evaluating traffic safety; however, other factors must also be considered, such as accident history data, driving difficulty, road geometry, and traffic characteristics. A wet pavement index, incorporating all factors relevant for traffic safety under wet weather conditions, should be developed to provide a basis for pavement management decisions related to highway safety.

Investigating the Relation among British Pendulum Number, Mean Texture Depth and Asphalt Content in Hot Mix Asphalt

Pavement surface texture and its skid resistance are two key safety parameters of highways, which both are influenced by pavement characteristics. This research is done on a newly constructed asphalt pavement (Qom-Garmsar freeway) in Iran. The goal is investigating the relation between skid resistance and pavement texture in order to asphalt content changes in Hot Mix Asphalt. Mean Texture Dept...

Locating Slippery Highway Sites by Accident Analysis

IN T R O D U C T IO N It is generally agreed that a wet pavement surface presents less resistance to skidding than does the same surface in a dry condition. It is also well known that ice and snow are very slippery; but on the other hand, they are special conditions which do not reflect any skid characteristic of the pavement surface. It is, therefore, the wet surface condition that is critical...

Pavement Prediction Performance Models and Relation with Traffic Fatalities and Injuries

This paper presents some results of a study, which aimed at modelling pavement evolution by different methods. In a first part, a database was constituted with data collected on French roads in the last decades. The database contains skid resistance values (Sideway Force Coefficient measured by SCRIM/Sideway force Coefficient Routine Investigation Machine), macrotexture values (Mean Profile Dep...

Introduction and Application of Rotational Abrasion Device to Determine Concrete Pavement Abrasion

Abrasion susceptibility of highway pavements has a great impact on the skid resistance, and consequently accident rate. A rotational abrasion device is introduced, providing the advantage of field simulation of wheel passage, in comparison with existing standard methods. The device was used to measure abrasion susceptibility of concrete pavements with different textures. The obtained results we...

The Effect of Asphalt Concrete Micro & Macro Texture on Skid Resistance

Skid resistance and road condition are common indices of road safety; therefore providing adequate skidding resistance will reduce the incidence of road accidents. The surface macrotexture has a large effect on the characteristics of road surface skidding, which is the focus of this research. During the study, the mean texture depth of the road surface was measured, in order to determine the co...
